Marie Tharp’s work revealed the detailed topography and multidimensional geographic landscape of the ocean floor. This discovery of Marie Tharp is considered globally important today. In 1948, when Marie Tharp began working at the Lamont Geological Laboratory (Lamont–Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University), little was known about the composition of the seafloor globally. It was considered mostly flat and featureless. After this, after the discovery and map of Marie Tharp, information about geology and sea level was received globally.
Marie Tharp’s first map :-
Marie Tharp, an American geologist and oceanographic cartographer, produced the first map of the sea level in the North Atlantic in 1957. Two decades later, National Geographic published the first world map of the entire ocean floor, written by two geologists, titled “The World Ocean Floor”. In which Marie Tharp’s name came first.
